Should Tottenham hold fire on Mawson and join Raphael Varane chase?

Tottenham Hotspur should consider joining Jose Mourinho in the race for the Real Madrid star.

With the Daily Mirror linking Toby Alderweireld with a move away from Tottenham during the summer, it appears that signing a new centre-back could well be a priority for Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the season.

Spurs have a group of very talented defenders, but losing Alderweireld would be a major blow for a side that is looking to battle for trophies on four fronts – regardless of how little he has played in recent times.

The Times reported that Tottenham are keen on Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson as his stock continues to rise in the Premier League. And while improbable relegation to the Championship would surely see the Swans’ asking price drop, The Sun reported ahead of the January window that they wanted £40 million for the 24-year-old who was recently handed his first England call-up.

Based on Mawson’s form during his time at the Liberty Stadium, he could well prove to be an excellent signing. But perhaps Pochettino should take notice of a report from the Mirror which suggested that Manchester United are eyeing a move for Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

The Mirror reports that Los Blancos want just £50 million for the France international. And with United only currently willing to offer £40 million, Spurs should consider swooping in and doing all they can to steal Varane from right under Jose Mourinho’s nose.

Varane is a quality defender, having already made almost 200 appearances for Madrid in all competitions, and bringing him to the Premier League would be a huge statement from Spurs, especially if they saw off competition from Mourinho for his signature.

Unfortunately for Mawson, signing Varane would be the deal that would see Tottenham send a real message out to the rest of the top flight and to the other heavyweights across Europe, and bringing players of his calibre in would surely also boost their chances of keeping the most important members of their squad in future, so it is difficult to see why Pochettino should not have a look at making a bid for the Frenchman in the summer.
