Tottenham Hotspur could do with signing a new right-back this summer.

Serge Aurier came in for further criticism from Tottenham Hotspur fans on Saturday.

Spurs might have beaten Stoke City 2-1 at The Bet 365 Stadium, but the Ivory Coast international showed why he was behind Kieran Trippier in Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order.

Aurier, who cost £24 million last summer, has looked like a liability on quite a few occasions this season and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Pochettino got rid of him and signed a better right-back to compete with Trippier next term.

If that is a possibility for the Argentine manager, should he consider Southampton’s Cedric Soares?

The Daily Mirror reported last summer that Pochettino was interested in signing the Portugal international, though the Lilywhites instead punted for the former Paris Saint-Germain man.

But maybe Soares – who got two assists in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal – was the better option all along and he could be available for a cut-price fee this summer.

If Southampton – who sit three points adrift of safety – are relegated then Soares is among the players who will surely leave and Tottenham could, in theory, pick him up for significantly less than the £15 million – £20 million pricetag that The Telegraph reported back in August.

The Germany-born defender has proven himself in the Premier League over the past three seasons and if the Saints go down, Pochettino could and should be tempted to go back for him at the expense of Aurier.
