Tottenham Hotspur need a right-back; why not go for Elseid Hysaj?
If Tottenham Hotspur struggled in one area last season, it was right-back.
The North Londoners sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City last summer but failed to adequately replace the England international.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino spent most of the campaign alternating between Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier, the man signed for £23 million from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
However, neither proved themselves to be on Walker’s level and a right-back should be an area where Pochettino plans to strengthen this summer.
If he does, is he missing a trick by not joining the race for Napoli star Elseid Hysaj?
The Albania international has flourished into one of Europe’s most consistent full-backs and has a £45 million release clause in his contract, eligible to be activated by clubs only outside of Italy.
His agent, Mario Giuffredi, was in England in April [Alfredo Pedulla] to discuss a move to the Premier League, amid reported interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, but Tottenham need someone of Hysaj’s expertise more than some of their top-flight rivals do.
Trippier and Aurier aren’t bad defenders by any means, but they aren’t good enough if Spurs have ambitions to improve. Hysaj, on the other hand, might be, and if he winds up at an English club and impresses then Pochettino should be questioned for sticking with what he has.
