The Tottenham Hotspur attacker did not get a fair crack of the whip last season.

Tottenham Hotspur fans may have had a wry smile after Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, with their winger Clinton N’Jie enjoying international success midway through the campaign.

The 23-year-old failed to make his mark at White Hart Lane last season, and his temporary stint at Marseille has yielded three goals and one assist in 13 appearances to date. But there is a feeling among some Tottenham supporters that N’Jie was not given enough time to prove his worth at White Hart Lane.

When you consider how long Vincent Janssen continues to take to find any kind of form in England, and with Georges-Kevin N’Koudou showing only sporadic moments of promise thus far, one wonders why Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was so quick to part company – albeit temporarily – with the attacker.

N’Jie featured 14 times for Tottenham last season, managing a single assist in the process, so it is easy to mark him down as a flop.

But that assist came in only his second appearance for Tottenham – in the 4-1 hammering of Manchester City – and preceded a serious knee injury that robbed him of much of the campaign.

N’Jie may feel he has unfinished business in North London and he at least deserves the summer to prove his worth at a club that is still lacking numbers in attacking areas.
