Should Tottenham forget interest in Cenk Tosun?

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun in recent times.

According to a recent report from The Sun, Tottenham have been keeping a keen eye on Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun, watching him in both of Turkey’s World Cup qualifiers during the recent break.

Tosun was excellent last season, scoring 20 goals in the Turkish top flight. And his form this term suggests that he may in line for another good year, with two goals coming in his first six league games of the campaign.

However, with ESPN reporting in September that Besiktas would be looking for around £18 million before selling the 26-year-old, Tottenham should arguably turn their attention elsewhere.

Tosun may prove to be a good signing, but with Harry Kane in sensational form and Fernando Llorente providing support, Mauricio Pochettino surely does not need to take an £18 million gamble on a striker who will certainly not be first choice for Spurs.

And with Roberto Soldado and Vincent Janssen’s form in England showing that spending big money on strikers who have impressed elsewhere provides no guarantee that they will be a success in the Premier League, Daniel Levy should certainly be wary of making a big-money bid for Tosun, who has only reached double figures for league goals once since moving to Besiktas.

Instead, Spurs should arguably look at trying to find the next Kane in their academy and relying on Llorente more until that point, or look at another player who has proved himself at Premier League level and is good enough to provide Kane with plenty of support.
