Tottenham Hotspur fans might baulk, but soon-to-be free agent Joao Moutinho should be seriously considered this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur fans are probably sick of hearing the name Joao Moutinho, but hear us out.

The 31-year-old went through a period of a few summer transfer windows when he was constantly being linked with a move to North London, with Harry Redknapp and Andre Villas-Boas both big fans of the midfielder.

In fact, the Monaco star told Sky Sports in 2016 that he was ‘minutes’ away from becoming a Tottenham player four years previous, but paperwork for the deal was not submitted in time.

These days, the Portugal international, who has 107 caps for his country, does not find himself linked with a move to Spurs any longer. The Lilywhites, under Mauricio Pochettino, appear to have moved on, but should the Argentine manager finish what Redknapp and AVB started and sign him this summer?

Moutinho is out of contract with the Principality side in June and it seems like Tottenham will never get a better chance to finally get their man – only this time he is free.

Spurs fans could be forgiven for wanting to draw a line under Moutinho and find better, younger midfielders, but Moutinho remains a fine talent and the reality is that Pochettino won’t find a better bargain this summer.

The former Porto schemer is earning around £75,000 per week in Ligue 1 (Silly Season), meaning that he is a viable option and chairman Daniel Levy could squeeze him inside Tottenham’s rigid wage structure.

He wouldn’t play every single game, but the North Londoners will have a lot of games again next season and signing someone of Moutinho’s talent, experience and lack of transfer fee is simply a no-brainer.
