Hull are reportedly interested in signing Derby’s out-of-favour midfielder Butterfield.

Derby County’s out-of-favour midfielder Jacob Butterfield is reportedly a target for struggling Championship side Hull City ahead of the January transfer window, but he could be just what Sunderland need.
The 28-year-old has been frozen out by Derby manager Frank Lampard since his arrival, with the likes of Mason Mount, Craig Bryson and Tom Huddlestone being preferred in the middle of the park.
The Hull Daily Mail claim Nigel Adkins wants to offer the former Huddersfield midfielder an escape route from Derby, by bringing him to the KCOM Stadium in the January window.
Butterfield is an experienced Championship midfielder, clocking up 288 appearances in England’s second tier – 80 of which came with Derby since he joined the club 2015 from Huddersfield for £5million (HDM).
However, his tough-tackling nature and long-range shooting ability would be perfect for a side like Sunderland, who are currently well on their way to an instant return to the Championship.
What is Butterfield’s most alluring feature, though, is the fact his contract expires at the end of the season and would be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.

However, he could be allowed to leave Derby for a cut-price figure in January instead, which is what is seemingly tempting Hull to move. It should convince the Black Cats too.
Landing a player of Butterfield’s stature and experience would be a crucial addition to Jack Ross’ promotion charge.
