Paul Woolston is reportedly set to leave Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle United are set to release goalkeeper Paul Woolston this summer, according to the Shields Gazette, just five years after he joined the Magpies from Sunderland – so should the Black Cats look to re-sign the teenage star?

The 19-year-old has failed to break his way into Rafa Benitez’s first team, despite training with the club’s first team of late and indeed making an impression on the Spanish boss.

The likes of Martin Dubravka, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Freddie Woodman are all above the one-time England Under-18 international, who has instead been shipped out on loan to the likes of Darlington and Blyth Spartans.

Now, Woolston is set to leave St. James’ Park this summer as he becomes surplus to requirements under Benitez, and Sunderland should pounce to add more competition in the goalkeeping department.

Both Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman chopped and changed between Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele throughout the campaign, as the Wearside club failed to prevent relegation to League One.

Another mass turnover of players is expected to take shape at the Stadium of Light this summer, with plenty of first-team players likely to want to leave the club after their demotion to the third tier of English football.

Bringing in a player like Woolston – who told the Hartlepool Mail that he is a Sunderland fan – is just the kind of signing they need in order to progress back into the Championship at the first attempt.
