Newcastle star Armstrong is looking to leave after a move to Blackburn fell through.
The Evening Chronicle have claimed that Adam Armstrong could be available for a move away from Newcastle United this summer – on loan or permanently – so should bitter rivals Sunderland consider a move?
The 21-year-old was keen on a permanent move to Blackburn Rovers, where he had scored 12 goals in 44 appearances for Tony Mowbray’s side during their promotion to the Championship.
However, the report claims a move fell through because Blackburn were unable to afford Armstrong’s £15k-a-week wages, despite regaining their place in the second tier of English football.
But with Sunderland likely to be after a new striker under manager Jack Ross, surely raiding bitter rivals Newcastle for Armstrong would prove to be an excellent addition following his strong form last term in League One?
The Black Cats are likely to be able to afford Armstrong’s wages after releasing Jack Rodwell, who was reportedly earning an enormous £73,000 every seven days – a deal which he agreed with Sunderland in the Premier League.
Removing that massive chunk off their wage bill, Sunderland will surely have money to spend and landing Armstrong this summer would be a top move.
Sunderland and Newcastle have done business in the past, with Jack Colback leaving the Stadium of Light to move to The Toon in the summer of 2014.
With Armstrong on the lookout and Rafa Benitez keen to sell, Newcastle and Sunderland could come to an agreement despite the local rivalry.
