McGeady, who has impressed on loan to Preston North End from Everton, could make the ideal Sunderland recruit.
Aidan McGeady in action for Preston North End
Everton winger Aiden McGeady has been a player rejuvenated at Preston North End this season, scoring four goals and creating eight for a Lilywhites side which is threatening to gatecrash the Championship’s top six.
But with Everton likely to have ambitious targets in mind ahead of the summer transfer window, the Irishman’s return to Goodison Park looks set to be fleeting at best.
McGeady’s Toffees deal expires in 2018, so a summer sale is perhaps in Ronald Koeman’s best interests. However, with Preston operating one of the division’s most modest budgets, it is difficult to envisage the 30-year-old making a permanent move to Deepdale. So should Sunderland offer an escape route?
The Mackems find themselves in an ever-precarious position at the foot of the Premier League and appear destined to end their decade-long stay in the top flight.
Even if David Moyes’ side do succumb to the drop, parachute payments should ensure McGeady remains an attainable target, while this season has proved he could be a good one too.
Moving to Sunderland is a proposition McGeady is sure to find appealing, given the city’s proximity to his native Glasgow and the amount of former colleagues currently on the club’s books – although Moyes never worked with the player himself.
David Moyes has brought former Everton players Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe, Joleon Lescott, Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson to Sunderland so far
Nevertheless, the Scot will be fully aware of McGeady’s ability to get supporters’ bums off seats – something those of a Sunderland persuasion usually only do on their way out of the Stadium of Light.
Would Everton’s McGeady be a good signing for Sunderland?
