Sunderland should look to West Bromwich Albion for the solution to their goalscoring woes.
The Black Cats earned a vital point against Liverpool yesterday, but their long-term survival aspirations have again been dealt a blow with injuries to key players.
Victor Anichebe sustained a pulled hamstring during his side’s 4-1 loss at Burnley last week, and Sunderland are still waiting to discover the extent of the injury.
January will be a vitally important month for the Wearsiders, if they are to pull themselves clear of relegation trouble.
And Moyes will surely be looking to add another striker to his squad, what with Anichebe’s injury and their over reliance on Jermain Defoe.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
The 34-year-old has scored 57.8 per cent of the Black Cats’ Premier League goals so far this term – an extremely worrying statistic for Sunderland fans.
Should they lose Defoe to either injury or suspension, they really would be in a whole world of trouble.
In light of this, Moyes should consider a January bid for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, with he 23-year-old’s contract at the Hawthorns due to expire in the summer.
West Brom’s Saido Berahino
Whilst the Baggies’ striker has a chequered past in regards to his attitude and disciplinary problems, he is still an incredibly talented player, who still has many years left to improve even further.
And he could be moulded into a long-term replacement for Defoe, if Sunderland made the bold move to bring him to the Stadium of Light.
Although Tony Pulis will surely not want to lose Berahino in January, the possibility of him leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer could be enough to convince him to sanction his exit, should Sunderland make a bid.
