The race for Jordan Rossiter is reportedly hotting up with Dundee United and Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town interested in signing the Rangers midfielder – and Jack Ross’ Sunderland should make it a three-way bout.

The Daily Express claim both Dundee United and Fleetwood want to sign Rossiter on loan after Gers boss Steven Gerrard discussed his future in Thursday afternoon’s press conference.

The Express quoted Gerrard as saying: “I’ve had a chat with Jordan and told him my options are to be selfish and keep him here as a squad player. But I don’t think that’s what he needs at this stage in his career.”

It may see Gerrard look to offload the England Under-21 international on loan within the next two weeks, and teaming up with another loanee in Jason Holt under ex-Teddy Bears star Barton is a possibility.

He has also been linked with a move to Scottish Championship side Dundee United, but Rangers fans are not keen for the ex-Liverpool academy product to go to Tannadice.

At Sunderland, he would be an excellent signing, though. The Black Cats need creativity in a bid to improve their fortunes in front of goal – they have scored just one goal in each of their last seven league games.

It has seen Ross’ promotion charge suffer somewhat, with the club now sitting in third and five points behind leaders Portsmouth – picking up just 12 points from a possible 21 in those seven matches.

Ross needs creativity and a player that can get beyond the striker, but has the stamina to remain defensively solid and get back behind the ball. Rossiter is exactly that man.

A run of game are required to keep him fit and he would surely get that at Sunderland. Landing the ex-Liverpool star on loan would be an enormous step towards Championship promotion.
