Sunderland are likely to bolster their options in their bid to gain an instant return to the Championship.

Jack Ross has got the cogs turning again at Sunderland, winning six consecutive League One outings – keeping four clean sheets in their last four games. With promotion now a distinct possibility, January becomes crucial.

Sunderland’s excellent form sees them sit in second place in League One, only three points behind leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand. A win in said game would put them in first, with the Black Cats boasting a better goal difference.

If Scottish manager Ross is to mastermind a push for promotion at the first attempt from League One after last season’s relegation, he will need to bolster his squad in January.

A freshness will be required to continue the enthusiasm and momentum, and signing a player that knows that it means to play for the Wearside club is key.

It should convince the former St. Mirren boss to consider Nottingham Forest general Liam Bridcutt, who has fallen down the pecking order at the City Ground and is likely to do so even more before January.

That is because Argentina international Claudio Yacob has finally regained his fitness and made his debut for Forest on Saturday, starring in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

The former West Brom star has seemingly pushed himself above Bridcutt in the pecking order, which also sees Adlene Guedioura and Jack Colback start above the former Leeds United captain.

Bridcutt, 29, has only managed four appearances all season for Sunderland, only one of those coming in the Championship. He played for Sunderland when they were in the Premier League between 2014 and 2016.

Clocking up 36 appearances – with a loan to Leeds in between – Bridcutt would be an excellent addition at League One level and would keep the cogs spinning as Ross looks to guide Sunderland back to the second tier immediately.
