Sunderland are in desperate need of a new striker in the January transfer window and have already been linked with former stars Jermain Defoe and Connor Wickham – but a Middlesbrough forward should also be on their agenda.

The Telegraph claim 30-year-old striker Gestede is a target for struggling Championship side Ipswich Town, with Paul Lambert looking to sign the powerful forward on loan.

Gestede has managed just four substitute appearances under Tony Pulis this season, with the likes of Britt Assombalonga, Ashley Fletcher and Jordan Hugill preferred up front.

A £6million signing from Aston Villa in January 2017, Gestede is renowned for his physicality and aerial prowess and has scored plenty of goals at Championship level – 46 in 159 appearances to be exact.

But it is his ability to bring other players into play that makes him just as important, and that could boost Sunderland in their hunt for promotion come the end of the season.

Jack Ross’ side are in desperate need of a forward. Jerome Sinclair has failed since joining the club from Watford on loan, while Charlie Wyke remains sidelined through injury.

The Wearside club have placed a tonne of pressure on teenage striker Josh Maja, but his future remains in doubt as his contract expires at the end of the season. The Sunderland Echo claim two offers have been received for his services.

A new striker is required then, and Gestede would be an excellent signing in the January window on loan, if Boro are willing to do business with rivals Sunderland.
