Sunderland would benefit from bringing in the talented Leeds United youngster on loan.
This month’s transfer window is important for many clubs, but especially for Sunderland, who remain bottom of the Championship table.
Chris Coleman’s side know that they have much work to do if they are to remain in the second tier of English football, and their transfer activity this month could go a long way towards determining whether they stay up.
Given that they have only scored 29 goals in the Championship this season, it seems clear that Sunderland would benefit from bringing in some attacking reinforcements.
One player who should perhaps be considered in that regard is Mallik Wilks, with the talented young striker having recently returned to Leeds United following a successful loan spell at League Two side Accrington Stanley, during which he gained a reputation for being a supersub.
Wilks, who can play as a centre-forward or a left-winger, emerged off the bench to find the net on three occasions for Accrington Stanley, while he also scored twice as a starter in the EFL Trophy.
While playing in the Championship would inevitably represent a major step up for Wilks, he appears to be a gamble worth taking as Sunderland look to become more prolific in front of goal and a loan deal would work well for all parties.
Leeds have plenty of forwards to call on right now but sending Wilks to Sunderland would allow them to see if the teenager can cut it in the second tier.
With Lewis Grabban, who is Sunderland’s leading scorer in all competitions this season with twelve goals, having been recalled by Bournemouth, it is clear that the Black Cats need some new attackers, and Wilks can certainly help them in that regard.
Leeds have already benefited from the loan market this season and sending the forward to the Championship strugglers could lay down the gauntlet to a player with a bright future at Elland Road.
