Leeds United fans would have surely never expected Rob Green to turn out to be such a brilliant signing.
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
During the early stages of the season, few would have expected that Leeds would have gone into the final weeks of the campaign still very much in the mix for promotion out of the Championship.
One of the key reasons for their success has been the form of Rob Green, especially since the turn of the year. The veteran goalkeeper has turned out to be a brilliant signing for the Whites, and Garry Monk would therefore be forgiven for targeting a couple of experienced players this summer to try and repeat the trick.
One player whose season has been somewhat similar to Green’s last before he joined Leeds is Newcastle United striker Daryl Murphy.
The 34-year-old – like Green with QPR – has struggled for opportunities with the Magpies this term. And while helping Rafa Benitez’s men secure automatic-promotion will be his sole focus currently, he will be aware that Newcastle reaching the Premier League may be bad news for his chances of securing more game-time next term.
Therefore, it may perhaps be wise for Monk to ask about the Republic of Ireland international’s availability in case Benitez does not intend to include Murphy in his plans and may be willing to sanction a deal.

Murphy has been incredibly underrated this term, proving that he can definitely still find the back of the net even without a prolonged run in the team to build some momentum.
And while some Leeds fans may prefer Monk to target other names to provide support for Chris Wood next season given Murphy’s age, many would have probably preferred someone other than Green to come in last summer so writing Murphy off making an impact if Monk did decide to target a move would surely be a mistake.
