In either case perhaps Everton should take a look across Stanley Park as they look to bolster their attacking options after losing topscorer Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United over the summer.
Oumar Niasse has done well since being reintegrated into the team, but new signing Sandro Ramirez has struggled and if fit there are few better natural finishers in English football than Sturridge.
While the two Merseyside clubs are rivals and deals directly between them are rare, they do happen and there is even more chance when it wouldn’t result in the sale of a key figure from the starting XI.
