Spurs are likely to be after a central midfielder this summer.
The Daily Mail claim Arsenal are in talks to sign Lucas Torreira from Serie A outfit Sampdoria, but do north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur perhaps need the Uruguayan more?
The 22-year-old is said to be a key target of Unai Emery’s, as the Spanish boss looks to fill the gaps left by long-serving Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.
But Juventus have approached Spurs over a move for Mousa Dembele, according to Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, and that should prompt Mauricio Pochettino to draw up a shortlist of central-midfield options.
Torreira should be high on that list despite the Gunners’ interest in the former Pescara ace, after another excellent season in Italy’s top tier that saw Sampdoria finish in a comfortable tenth place, easily avoiding a relegation scrap.
Without Dembele, Spurs are left with only Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Vincent Wanyama, with Pochettino using a system that requires two central midfielders. Cover is required, even without the sale of Dembele.
The report claims Torreira is available for just £22million, despite scoring four goals from deep during 36 league appearances for Sampdoria during last season.
The pocket-sized 5ft 5in midfield maestro is renowned for his impeccable passing and technical ability, but also boasts a fiery South American aggression that sees him win the ball back with ease in between midfield and defence.
Adding that to Spurs side, which already boasts plenty of South American talent in Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga, Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, would be a major coup for Spurs – especially if they can beat Arsenal to his signature.
At a decent fee, Torreira must be considered by Spurs.
