Southampton could arguably do with additional creativity, so perhaps a move for a former target would be ideal.
Cristian Tello
A report in The Sun from last July suggested that Southampton were interested in signing Barcelona forward Cristian Tello, who would have been available for £10 million.
Tello would not end up moving to St Mary’s of course, instead joining Serie A side Fiorentina on a season-long loan, but Sport recently suggested that he is set to return to the Nou Camp with the the Italian club deciding against making the deal permanent.
Former Southampton manager Claude Puel wanted Tello
So perhaps the Saints should consider reigniting their interest in the forward this summer.
Tello was fairly impressive during his most recent season in Italy, scoring four and contributing four assists in the top flight, having featured right across the midfield throughout the year.
Southampton struggled for goals last season
Meanwhile, Claude Puel’s men were the lowest goalscorers in the top-half of the Premier League this season, with just 41 strikes coming in 38 games, so some additional creativity would surely be most welcome.
The 25-year-old could certainly help add some extra depth going forward, and given Barca’s desire to move him on (via Sport), it may not be out of the question to suggest that the Saints could potentially land him for a very good price.
