A report claims Mawson could be off to West Ham United for £25 million, so should Southampton pounce?

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are ready to meet Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson demands – so should Southampton try to muscle in on the Hammers’ pursuit?
Southampton are themselves in the market for a new centre-half, after confirming Virgil van Dijk’s transfer to Liverpool on Wednesday.
And armed with £75 million from that deal, the Saints could plausibly top any West Ham bid for Mawson.
Any such move would be somewhat out of character for Southampton – whose record outlay stands at a mere £18 million following their summer acquisition of Mario Lemina – although there could be little alternative, with January a notoriously difficult month in which to recruit.

Besides, £25 million is about the going rate for a bottom-half Premier League defender – it’s what Everton paid for Michael Keane, for instance.
And while Mawson may favour a move to West Ham – given his London [Hillingdon] roots – money certainly talks.
Southampton is little more than an hour’s drive anyway.
Should Southampton make a move for alleged West Ham United target Alfie Mawson?
