A report claims Mawson could be off to West Ham United for £25 million, so should Southampton pounce?

Swansea player Alfie Mawson in action during the Premier League match between Swansea City and Leicester City at Liberty Stadium on October 21, 2017 in Swansea, Wales.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are ready to meet Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson demands – so should Southampton try to muscle in on the Hammers’ pursuit?

Southampton are themselves in the market for a new centre-half, after confirming Virgil van Dijk’s transfer to Liverpool on Wednesday.

And armed with £75 million from that deal, the Saints could plausibly top any West Ham bid for Mawson.

Any such move would be somewhat out of character for Southampton – whose record outlay stands at a mere £18 million following their summer acquisition of Mario Lemina – although there could be little alternative, with January a notoriously difficult month in which to recruit.

Michael Keane of Everton during the UEFA Europa League group E match between Everton FC and Atalanta at Goodison Park on November 23, 2017 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Besides, £25 million is about the going rate for a bottom-half Premier League defender – it’s what Everton paid for Michael Keane, for instance.

And while Mawson may favour a move to West Ham – given his London [Hillingdon] roots – money certainly talks.

Southampton is little more than an hour’s drive anyway.
