Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke but if they miss out would West Brom’s Nacer Chadli be a good alternative?

Xherdan Shaqiri of Stoke City applauds fans during the Premier League match between Swansea City and Stoke City at Liberty Stadium on May 13, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

Southampton have stepped up their attempts to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City, according to the Mirror, after the forward revealed he wants to leave.

Shaqiri is expected to depart the Potters following their relegation to the Championship, but wants to remain in the Premier League and could be tempted by a reunion with former manager Mark Hughes.

Mark Hughes, Manager of Southampton looks on prior to the Premier League match between Southampton and Manchester City at St Mary's Stadium on May 13, 2018 in Southampton, England.

Hughes was the one who signed the Switzerland international for Stoke from Inter Milan in 2015 and the Welshman wants to reunite with the 26-year-old – who has a £12m release clause – once again.

The Saints face competition for Shaqiri, though, with Tottenham Hotspur among the others keeping tabs on the attacker and in the event they miss out, who could they sign instead?

Possible alternative

Another player expected to leave a relegated club this summer is Nacer Chadli, who is among those reported by the Express and Star to be on their way out of the Hawthorns.

The newspaper also says that Chadli has a £17m release clause triggered by the Baggies suffering the drop and although injury limited the 28-year-old to just six appearances last term, the Belgian does have a good pedigree in the English top flight from his time spent with West Brom and Spurs.

The Belgium international is currently with his national team after being selected in their final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia.
