Matthew Pennington can reportedly leave Everton this summer so should Sheffield Wednesday take a closer look?
Marcel Brands has wasted no time in making his mark since being appointed Everton’s director of football with the Mirror reporting 12 players will be axed under his watch.
One of Brands’ first tasks since being hired from PSV Eindhoven is to trim down the Toffees’ bloated squad, taking the number from its current 38 players to between 25 to 30.
Among the names on the unwanted list is Matthew Pennington, despite the fact the defender only recently signed a contract extension at Goodison Park until 2021.
That could maybe point to the fact that Pennington, who spent the 2017/18 season at Leeds United, will be sent out on loan again and there is supposedly interest from the Championship.
Where could he go?
The 23-year-old did not have the best of times at Elland Road last term, but could well remain a decent option for cash-strapped sides in the English second tier.
Which is perhaps why Sheffield Wednesday should take a closer look, with their transfer funds likely to be limited in order not to breach Financial Fair Play rules – as outlined by the Sheffield Star.
The Owls need support in Pennington’s position of centre-back as well with Glenn Loovens leaving the club and Fernando Venancio returning to Vitoria following his loan spell.
