Derby County are said to be keen on a move for Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom.

But with promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday also seeking reinforcements at the back, should the Owls look to muscle in on the Rams’ alleged plan?

What sort of player is he?

A marauding right-back for much of his early career, Widsom was most recently used as a centre-back by Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg, with whom he spent the 2016-17 season on loan. At 6ft 1ins, comfortable on the ball and with more muscles than Grimsby docks, he could certainly succeed in the latter role long-term.

Where would he fit at Wednesday?

The Owls have been seeking a partner for Tom Lees for more than a year now, but by Carlos Carvalhal’s own admission were priced out during last summer’s transfer window and opted to redeploy Sam Hutchinson instead. Wisdom could be the man he’s looking for – and would also give Jack Hunt a run for his money at right-back.

Could they beat Derby County to his signature?

Derby closing in on a cut-price move for Hull City’s Curtis Davies, according to the Mirror, which could give Wednesday a window. However, Liverpool are said to want £4 million for Wisdom, which is perhaps a bit steep. Nevertheless, it could prove a worthwhile investment, given that the Bradford-born player still only 24. With Financial Fair Play to consider, though, the Owls would surely only pay that much for a first-choice centre-half and not a back-up right-back.
