After two successive years losing in the playoffs since Carlos Carvalhal took over as manager, Sheffield Wednesday will be doing all they can to gain promotion from the Championship in 2017/18.

Having finished in fourth place in the 2016/17 table, defeat to eventual winners and Yorkshire rivals, Huddersfield Town, on penalties came as a bitter blow to the Owls.

But despite being linked with moves away, Carvalhal has committed his future to the club and has pledged to concentrate on bringing in a few targeted signings that will improve the first team.

Well central midfield is one of those areas that needs improving and there is a potentially free transfer available this summer that would do just that in Reading’s Danny Williams.

Williams also tasted playoff defeat to Huddersfield via a penalty shootout, but scored his own spot-kick in the final and earned many admirers for his all-action style in the middle.

The 28-year-old has been a very effective box-to-box midfielder in Jaap Stam’s system over the past 12 months and is superb at breaking up play and then getting his team on the attack.

Not only that but Williams is out of contract this summer and is yet to sign a new deal with the Royals. While Stam will also be targeting promotion next term, after being at the Madejski Stadium since 2013 perhaps the USA international will be ready for a new challenge?
