Ross McCormack endured a miserable first season at Aston Villa, but perhaps there may be reason to suggest that there is some hope.
Based on how his first season at Aston Villa played out, few supporters would probably be particularly bothered if Ross McCormack ended up leaving the club after just one year this summer.
The Birmingham Mail recently suggested that Sunderland are considering offering the Villans’ £12 million signing the chance to make a fresh start – but perhaps the similarities between McCormack’s first campaign at Villa and former club Leeds should give Steve Bruce some hope if he cannot move the 30-year-old on.
Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack
Last term, the Scotland international scored three times in 20 Championship games for Villa, which is certainly not a record to shout about – though off-field issues appeared to play their part in influencing his form.
Interestingly however, his record with Villa is actually better than what he managed during his first year at Elland Road, with just two league goals coming in 21 games for the Whites.
He would follow that season however, with a significant improvement as he scored 18 times for Leeds in the next campaign and 51 league goals across his final three seasons with the Whites.
Of course, it would surely be understandable if Bruce was not confident that such a similar upturn in form was on the cards this time around, but perhaps his form for Leeds – especially after a similarly slow start – and then with Fulham should give Villa some hope that if McCormack sticks around, he could perhaps actually have a chance of making more of an impact this season.
Villa fans however, will surely need some convincing that he is still capable of turning his fortunes around.
