Jack Colback is in need of a new club and the arrival of a former boss at a Championship side would improve his changes of making a move.
Steve McClaren could be heading back to English football as The Star reports Sheffield Wednesday are in talks with the former England manager.
It would be understandable if these reports were not wholeheartedly welcomed at Hillsborough as McClaren’s career has stuttered in recent seasons, failing at both Newcastle United and Derby County.
But he remains an experienced boss and has knowledge of competing at the top of the Championship.
Wednesday would be aided by McClaren’s insight in the coming transfer window, if they were to seal a move for him, and there are sure to be players available that he has worked with in the past.
And one of those would be Jack Colback, who has yet to feature for Newcastle in the Premier League this season after playing a key role in their second-tier title triumph last term.
Colback was a key man for McClaren in his ill-fated spell on Tyneside and the majority of Championship clubs would want a player of his ability in their squad.
The former Sunderland man is primarily a central midfielder, but he also offers the versatility to play in either full back position.
And even if Colback could not immediately breach the Wednesday first team, he would improve the group’s depth. McClaren would certainly be aware of that and should consider a move.
