Premier League side Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in landing Rangers defender James Tavernier this summer, but should the Gers work a deal in their favour?
The Scottish Sun claim Palace are set to launch a £3.5million move to land the goalscoring right-back, with the 27-year-old catching the eye after scoring 27 goals in 125 appearances for the club.
The defender arguably enjoyed the best season of his career on a personal level, being involved in 18 goals this term. He scored nine, and laid on another nine assists for the Scottish giants.
His performances have been noted by Palace, who are readying a bid in order to test Steven Gerrard’s resolve since the Liverpool legend moved to Ibrox. Tavernier still has three years remaining on his contract.
But Gerrard could look to use the sale of Tavernier to Rangers’ advantage, by requesting Palace to include Scottish midfielder James McArthur in a deal after the Gers are said to be interested in the former Hamilton star.
The Daily Mail claimed last month that McArthur, 30, was a name on Rangers’ transfer shortlist ahead of the summer window, despite the Daily Star claiming he earned £50,000 a week back in 2016.
The Gers boast a whole host of central midfielders, especially since Gerrard has brought Scott Arfield to Ibrox from Burnley. The likes of Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Jordan Rossiter, Jason Holt and Andy Halliday are all fighting for a place.
But none boast the quality, and indeed the pedigree, of Palace star McArthur. So, if Rangers are indeed forced to sell Tavernier to Palace, they should only play ball if McArthur is included in a deal.
