Glasgow Rangers need to add to their centre-back options this summer after a difficult season at Ibrox.

Heading into this summer, one of Steven Gerrard’s main priorities in his opening months as Rangers boss has to be to bolster the defence that looked vulnerable throughout this past season and now has seen arguably their best performer, David Bates, leave for Germany.
The Daily Record has recently reported that Connor Goldson is on the verge of joining the Gers, but Gerrard undoubtedly needs further reinforcements if he hopes to put together a side that stands a very decent chance of challenging Celtic next season.

And perhaps Gerrard’s need to sign more defenders even if they get Goldson in should tempt Rangers to make an ambitious move for Sebastian Caceres, who appears to have most of Europe’s biggest clubs chasing his signature.
Caceres plays for Liverpool FC in Uruguay, but The Sun recently reported that he has the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all wanting to bring him to the Premier League, while The Sun also suggested in September that Barcelona were eyeing a move.

With those clubs interested, Rangers fans would be forgiven for feeling that it is almost pointless considering joining the race. But perhaps his latest comments should tempt Gerrard to try his luck.
In comments reported by The Sun, Caceres named Gerrard as his hero, praising his leadership skills in particular. Therefore, the idea of linking up with the Englishman at Ibrox may perhaps be an opportunity that tempts the teenager to snub the more lucrative moves on offer.
Rangers could also offer a much clearer path to the first-team than some of the heavyweights who have actually registered an interest, so that may also prove to be a slight advantage depending on what boxes Caceres wants ticked when he considers his next move.
Of course, Rangers would probably stand little chance if they did have a look at the youngster and subsequently registered an interest, but with Gerrard as his hero and the Gers definitely needing more options at the heart of their defence, there seems no reason why the Light Blues should not try their luck and roll the dice with an ambitious bid.
