Should Rangers target Jason Cummings’ teammate Zach Clough?

Glasgow Rangers should perhaps make a bid to bring the £3 million striker to Ibrox on loan next season.

One of the best pieces of business that Rangers did during the January transfer window has to be the decision to sign Jason Cummings on loan – even if the striker is yet to fully hit the heights with the Gers.

The club confirmed when they completed the deal that they have the option to make his move from Nottingham Forest permanent this summer, and that clause could end up proving a masterstroke if the 22-year-old finds his best form in the remaining weeks of the campaign.

The youngster may not have been the roaring success just yet that Graeme Murty may have hoped he would be, but his record of five goals in 12 appearances for the Light Blues is still incredibly encouraging considering he has made just five starts.

But Rangers should arguably not only make Cummings’ deal a permanent one at the end of the season, but they should also consider making a potential move for one of the youngster’s Forest teammates.

Zach Clough appears to have lost his way somewhat this season. The 23-year-old looked to be one of the Football League’s brightest prospects during his days with Bolton Wanderers, but struggled to find his feet after joining Forest for £3 million – fee reported by the Nottingham Post – while they were managed by former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton.

Aitor Karanka allowed Clough to rejoin Bolton on loan in January, and again, he has moved out to the periphery of the squad, often beginning games on the bench for the Trotters.

But Rangers should look at Clough’s apparent decline as the perfect opportunity to make a loan bid at the end of the season – perhaps with a permanent clause included as they have done with Cummings.

Ahead of the 2017 January transfer window, The Sun reported that Everton and Middlesbrough were keen to hand him a chance in the Premier League, while four Championship sides also had their eye on him.

He is clearly a player with a lot of potential, and Rangers arguably do not have the depth right now to let the summer pass without strengthening their options up front and in attacking midfield.

It would be a gamble, but Clough was a Premier League target little over a year ago, so if Rangers do make a move this summer, it is highly possible that it could prove to be an inspired decision from the Scottish Premiership side.
