Former Rangers attacking midfielder Thomas Buffel has told The Scottish Sun that he can still carry on playing despite being in his mid-30s.

Buffel is 36 years of age and is on the books of Genk at the moment. The attacking midfielder, though, will become a free agent at the end of June 2017 when his current contract with the Belgian club runs out, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

The former Feyenoord midfielder, who played for Scottish giants Rangers from 2005 until 2008, has said that he wants to carry on playing.

“I feel completely like a footballer once more, so it’s not a question of me retiring at this point,” Buffel told The Scottish Sun. “In the end I’ve played some 50 matches this season.

“I think I still have what it takes to help a club on a similar level to where I am now. I’ve had some opening talks about continuing with Genk, but I can’t say more beyond that.”

Buffel is past his prime, but his sheer determination to carry on playing professionally should make him an attractive proposition for Rangers.

The Gers need players with a lot of experience and with a winning mentality in the squad for next season in order to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The 36-year-old has won league titles and cup competitions in Scotland and in Belgium, and he would be a valuable addition to Pedro Caixinha’s side.

Buffel would not be playing week in and week out, if Rangers are able to progress to the group stage of the Europa League next season, then they will need a big squad.

The Belgian international could be a very good impact player and could do a great job coming on as a substitute.
