Should Rangers rival Hearts for signing of Christophe Berra?

Glasgow Rangers arguably need additional depth in defence, and Christophe Berra may perhaps be worth targeting.

A report in The Scottish Sun has linked Hearts with a move for Christophe Berra, but given their lack of options at centre-back, perhaps it should be Rangers looking to sign the 31-year-old.

Mark Warburton’s men’s main problem this term has arguably been scoring goals, but it would arguably be foolish for the Gers boss to let the window close without looking to strengthen his options at the heart of the side’s defence.

Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and Clint Hill have done fairly well this season, but the latter would need to have the longevity of David Weir to be deemed a long-term option for the Ibrox club.

Meanwhile, Philippe Senderos has done little to suggest that his spell with the Light Blues will be a successful one, having made just two competitive appearances since arriving, and having been sent off in the first Old Firm game of the campaign. And David Bates appears to be some way off being ready for the first-team as he still awaits his competitive debut for the club.

Berra, on the other hand, continues to impress for current club Ipswich Town. The 31-year-old’s age may lead some supporters to suggest that he may not be the long-term answer either, but he has played in all 26 Championship games the Tractor Boys have played this season, and has made more than 40 league appearances in each of the previous three campaigns, so reliability should not be an issue.

And with The Scottish Sun reporting that Berra is entering the final six months of his contract, it may not cost too much to land him even if they targeted him during this window.

While The Scottish Sun adds that Berra is keen on returning to Tynecastle, he may reflect upon the idea of moving to Rangers just as favourably, especially if they are able to offer European football next season.

And if they do qualify for Europe next term, they will surely need a player of the Scotland international’s calibre and experience amongst their ranks to give them a better chance of competing on several fronts.
