Glasgow Rangers were reportedly scared off in their attempts to try and bring Jack Marriott to Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard manager of Rangers looks on during the UEFA Europa League Qualifying Round match between Rangers and Shkupi at Ibrox Stadium on July 12, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

While Steven Gerrard has addressed several of the areas for concern within the Rangers squad during the opening weeks of the transfer window, it would appear that the Gers still desperately need to add to their options up front.

Alfredo Morelos can be lethal but struggled at times against Shkupi in midweek and Umar Sadiq is an unproven talent. Rangers fans would be forgiven for placing a large question mark over Eduardo Herrera’s future with the Light Blues.

One player that Gerrard reportedly had his eye on is Jack Marriott after the Peterborough striker’s stunning season in League One, where he scored 27 goals in the third tier and 33 in all competitions for Posh.

The Scottish Sun however, reported last month that Rangers had been scared off a move for the 23-year-old after being told that he would cost £5 million.

But perhaps Rangers should rethink that strategy now that one of their former strikers has moved to London Road in the hope that they may be able to negotiate a decent price for Marriott.

Jason Cummings spent the second-half of last season on loan at Ibrox. And while the deal initially appeared to be a brilliant piece of business, Cummings never quite managed to prove himself for the Scottish Premiership side as he often played the role of understudy to Morelos.

He has now joined Peterborough for the coming season, and Rangers should now look to open negotiations with the League One side in the hope that Cummings’ arrival has left the path slightly clearer for a deal to be done for Marriott.

It may appear a gamble to spend £5 million on the forward, but given the goals that he scored last season, it could prove to be an inspired risk for Rangers if they decide to get back involved in the race in the hope that Cummings’ move has made a deal easier to get done.
