Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers should try bringing Newcastle United’s Ciaran Clark to the Scottish Premiership.
It seems pretty obvious that new Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is in the market for a centre-back.
Gerrard, who lost David Bates to Hamburg prior to his arrival, was reported by The Record to be interested in bringing Martin Skrtel to Ibrox.
But financially the transfer was too difficult for Rangers and now Newcastle United are keen on the Slovakian stalwart, according to The Chronicle.
Skrtel’s proposed move to Newcastle might make Ciaran Clark even more of an also-ran in Rafael Benitez’s side and Gerrard should consider the Republic of Ireland star.
The London-born 28-year-old, who qualifies for the Irish through his mother, hasn’t kicked a ball for Newcastle since February due to Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune’s form, and a summer exit certainly seems plausible.
If Skrtel arrives, then Clark – a £5 million signing in 2016 [The Chronicle] – will be pushed further down the pecking order and the new Rangers manager, who played under Benitez at Liverpool, should ask his old boss about the possibility of bringing him to Glasgow.
He might not be good enough for a mid-table Premier League club, but Clark, on £30,000 per week on Tyneside [Silly Season], would be a fantastic asset in the Scottish Premiership.
