Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers’ draw with Marseille only served as a reminder how Pedro Caixinha needs another striker – and fast.

Speaking to Rangers TV on Saturday, Pedro Caixinha admitted that his Rangers side have an issue.

The Portuguese manager, speaking after Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Marseille in a friendly, said: “I really liked the team, especially in the first half or the first hour of the game. They were really compact and controlled the game, and understood how to face a team like that.

“The only thing we were missing, like all the games we have played so far, was the definition. We created a lot of chances but we could not score.”

Niko Kranjcar’s free kick earned a respectable draw for the Gers but it papered over the cracks. Fact is, Caixinha needs another striker and his comments suggest that he knows it. With that in mind, could Kris Doolan be an option for the 46-year-old boss?

The Ibrox side have now failed to score from open play in the three games since their first-leg Europa League win over Progres last month and, with the Premiership season kicking off in two weeks, it’s a worry.

The Partick Thistle hitman, who has 94 league goals for the Jags, has netted 25 Premiership goals in his last 50 starts. It’s not an outstanding record, and yet he would still be a more accomplished striker than Martyn Waghorn, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos.

Kenny Miller, at 37, is Rangers’ best striker and that says it all. Waghorn proved last season that he isn’t the hitman that the Gers need and although Herrera and Morelos have excellent goalscoring records, they are unproven in Scottish football.

Doolan does not turn 31 until December and, with his contract set to expire in two years, he should certainly be considered by Caixinha. He wouldn’t fire Rangers to the Premiership title, but they’ll do far better with him than they would if no other forward option is signed.
