Sam Allardyce has been available all this time but it seems that managerless Rangers didn’t make much of an approach.
So Sam Allardyce could take charge of Everton after all. A fortnight after the 63-year-old appeared to rule out a return to management with The Toffees, claiming he was not convinced they wanted him in the first place, Sky Sports reports that they have re-opened talks with the one-time England manager.
It is likely that Allardyce, something of a last-resort option with Everton’s top targets either unavailable or unwilling, will be handed a contract to the end of the season with the aim of giving this underperforming, expensively assembled side one hell of a boot up the rear end.
But while Everton’s prolonged managerial search appears to be coming to an end at last, there is still no signs of a conclusion for the similarly directionless Rangers.
Like the Merseyside giants, Rangers sacked their manager a month ago and have not yet found a replacement. But with Allardyce possibly off the market once and for all, supporters may have a right to question the board once again.
After all, the Daily Record reported that Rangers wanted a British manager and someone with the experience and ability to motivate a squad looked the perfect fit for a side who are lacking in identity.
There was no shortage of former Rangers stars attempting to nudge the club in Allardyce’s direction, Derek Johnstone in particular telling the Evening Times that the veteran gaffer would get the best out of the talent at Ibrox.
But after Derek McInnes committed his future to Aberdeen and with links to Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill growing cold, it seems that another viable candidate in Allardyce has also passed Rangers by.
