New Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha is in the market for centre-backs this summer, with Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos set to leave Ibrox at the end of their deals.
But should the Portuguese enter the race to sign Frederico Venancio, who was linked with a move to Leeds United, Derby County and Reading this week?
Who is he?
A six-foot-one-inch 24-year-old stopper, who is the current captain of Liga NOS outfit Vitoria Setubal. Venancio has impressed for the club whose ranks he progressed through, which to an approach from Greek giants Olympiakos in January. The former Portugal Under-21 international turned them down, however, hoping instead for a move to England. Scottish football – and Rangers in particular – could be the perfect stepping stone.

What attributes would he bring to Ibrox?
He’s good at sniffing out danger, getting his body in the way accordingly and is stronger than his frame suggests. In terms of distribution, he’s not one for taking unnecessary risks with the ball, but is partial to a diagonal ball to the front man. His leadership qualities speak for themselves, having captained Setubal from the age of 22.
What are Rangers chances of landing him?
He’s got a year left on his contract which, combined with the sudden appearance of his name in the English press, suggests a summer move is likely. How much he’ll cost remains to be seen, although his current Transfermarkt valuation is £1.7 million, which you’d like to think Rangers could stretch to – it’s less than Joe Garner after all. Whether he’d be keen on a move to Ibrox is another matter, with Leeds, Derby and Reading each capable of threatening the Light Blues’ plans.
