Steven Gerrard has been linked with a whole host of central defenders with Rangers problem area yet to be strengthened by the new manager.
The loss of David Bates to Hamburg and Russell Martin’s return to Norwich City leaves just Ross McCrorie, Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves as options at centre-back.
The likes of Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Gareth McAuley have been linked with a move to Ibrox of late, but Gerrard is still faced with little to choose from at centre-back with only a month until the Gers begin their Europa League qualifying campaign.
It may convince the former Liverpool and England captain to delve into the loan market – something which he has already done in bringing Ovie Ejaria to Ibrox until the end of the season.
Premier League clubs are likely to loan out hundreds of players this summer, and one should be high on Rangers shortlist to add cover to their defence – but to also add a midfield presence.
Everton’s Callum Connolly starred for Ipswich Town last season, playing alongside Martyn Waghorn and Joe Garner at Portman Road. Though he was signed a central defender, he starred for the Tractor Boys in midfield.
Connolly’s fine campaign saw him make 39 appearances in all competitions, and he even chipped in with four goals. His stock has continued to rise at the Toulon Tournament, as England held aloft the trophy. Gerrard was in attendance.
Now, the 20-year-old has returned to Everton, but is faced with huge traffic for places ahead of him in both central defence and midfield. It is likely that Marco Silva will loan the youngster out again.
With only a year remaining on his contract, Rangers should look to sign Connolly on loan to add cover in both midfield and defence and help the Toffees prospect’s reputation continue to grow.
