The club captain is on his way back to full fitness at Ibrox, but Declan John has nailed down the left-back role at Rangers.

Rangers have received a boost this week with the news that club captain Lee Wallace is on the verge of a return to first-team action.

The 30-year-old has been out since September with a groin injury and will be hoping to get straight back into the Rangers starting XI.

However, he will face a challenge, with the impressive Declan John now surely ahead of him in the pecking order.

So could it see a potential positional change from the veteran Rangers star?

With Danny Wilson departing and Bruno Alves’ fitness also inconsistent Rangers are not blessed for centre-back options.

Wallace therefore might want to start thinking about moving in and becoming a more central defender in the months to come.

His marauding days at Ibrox seem to be behind him but he could certainly slot into a more defensive role.

Standing at six foot one inches the Rangers man clearly has the physical attributes to play in the role and with his age advancing, switching into a more central defensive role was surely an option that must have been approached in recent times.

He could certainly prove to be an excellent addition to the centre-back ranks and being naturally left-footed he would add some balance alongside either Russell Martin, David Bates or any of the other Rangers centre-halves.

Wallace’s return is good news for Rangers but perhaps a shift inside could be a big step in the right direction for him and the Glasgow club.
