Steven Gerrard is reportedly in talks with Rangers over the manager’s role.
Rangers right-back James Tavernier is reportedly the subject of interest from Premier League trio Everton, Swansea City and Burnley ahead of the summer window, and Steven Gerrard must bring in a high-profile replacement if Tavernier leaves.
The Daily Mirror reported on Sunday, via the Sun, that 27-year-old Tavernier could move down south after scoring eight goals from the right side of defence as well as wearing the captain’s armband on occasion.
Liverpool legend Gerrard remains in talks with the Scottish giants over replacing Graeme Murty, who was relieved of his duties earlier this week following Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Celtic.
The appointment of the former Liverpool and England captain could indeed see Gerrard look to his former club Liverpool for potential recruits, as he remains in charge of the Under-18 side alongside his punditry work.
But if Tavernier does indeed leave, a big-name replacement is required to patch-up the loss of the former Newcastle defender who has arguably been Rangers’ best player this season.
It should see Gerrard return to one of his former Liverpool teammates, in the form of Stoke City right-back Glen Johnson who is available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 33-year-old is set to see his contract at expire at the Britannia Stadium, whether or not the Potters remain in the top tier of English football. He has made just eight Premier League appearances this season.
But north of the border, Johnson would still be able to do a job in a Rangers side that needs a bit of glamour and experience. The 54-time England international played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool for six years between 2009 and 2015.
Adding Johnson to Rangers’ ranks would not only see the Gers replace Tavernier with a player capable of similar quality, but also make a profit with Johnson available for nothing and Tavernier requiring a transfer fee.
