Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers should monitor under-pressure Paul Clement.
According to The Daily Mail, Swansea City boss Paul Clement could be fired if the Welsh side lose to Crystal Palace this weekend. Monday’s 3-1 defeat at Everton means that the Swans have now lost eight of their last 10 Premier League games and the pressure is firmly on Clement.
In the event that he is sacked this weekend, should Rangers keep an eye on him over potentially replacing Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox?
It took six weeks for the Gers to get serious about hiring a successor for the Portuguese, who was axed in October, but Derek McInnes snubbed them when they approached him, forcing Rangers to give Graeme Murty the job until the end of the season.
You could argue that their lengthy and ultimately futile attempt to replace Caixinha was down to a lack of organisation and preparation, and touching base with Clement – if he parts company with the Premier League side – at this stage would show that Rangers are finally learning from their mistakes.
He spent two years as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Real Madrid, watching on from the dugout as the Italian manager delivered the Blancos’ 10th European Cup – la Decima – and then became Derby boss after quitting the Spanish giants following Ancelotti’s sacking.
Clement was fired from the Rams within seven months in a decision which shocked the Championship, given that County were fifth in the division at the time.
The 45-year-old began his coaching career at Chelsea, where he worked alongside now-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.
It goes without saying that starting his managerial career from the same platform as Rodgers doesn’t indicate that he would be as successful for Rangers as the Northern Irishman has been for Celtic.
But Clement is young, ambitious and, like Rodgers, will be determined to rebuild his reputation upon being dismissed by a Premier League side. He ticks a lot of boxes and the Ibrox club should at least consider him.
