Barnsley wing wizard Adam Hammill is set to leave Oakwell this summer after the Tykes submitted their retained list, and Rangers should consider a reunion between the midfielder and incoming manager Steven Gerrard.
Hammill, 30, joins first-team stars such as Andy Yiadom and Matt Mills in leaving the Yorkshire club after they suffered relegation to the third tier of English football.
One-time England Under-21 international Hammill made 42 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley last season but could not do anything to save them from relegation. Now, he will be looking for a new home in the summer.
Rangers need wingers, despite completing the permanent signing of Scotland international Jamie Murphy last week. Gerrard now has only Murphy and Daniel Candeias to choose from out wide, with Josh Windass preferred inside.
Adding another wide man to his squad is imperative, so why not a player that came through the ranks at Liverpool and idolised captain Gerrard during the latter’s time at Anfield?
Joining Liverpool in 1995 aged just seven, Hammill finally left Merseyside in 2009 without making a single senior appearance. But in those 14 years, Hammill will have watched Gerrard go from making his debut to becoming a Reds legend.
The level of admiration Hammill is likely to have for Gerrard would surely bring the best out of the former Wolves winger, if he was given the chance to work with him again.
