Rangers need major improvement as they sit way behind Celtic in terms of stature.
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Ross Wallace is set to leave Hillsbrough on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract ends, and Rangers should bring him back to Scotland.
The 32-year-old set-piece specialist left Rangers’ bitter rivals Celtic in 2006 to join Sunderland, after making just 18 appearances for the Bhoys in all competitions.
Following spells with Burnley, Preston and Sunderland, the Sheffield Wednesday ace is now set to end his spell in Yorkshire but it remains to be seen if he will find another club.
A one-time Scotland international, Wallace boasts huge experience in the English Championship, clocking up a huge 354 appearances in England’s second tier – affirming himself as somewhat of a Championship expert.
Whoever replaces Graeme Murty at Ibrox will need to add width to a side that boast just Daniel Candeias and Jamie Murphy out wide, while Dalcio, Michael O’Halloran and Joe Dodoo remain on the fringes.
Wallace provides that quality from out wide, and although he does not possess an abundance of speed, his quality from set pieces as well as an unwavering long-range shooting ability would give Rangers an extra dimension going forward.
Rangers, then, should look to put rivalry aside and lure Wallace to Ibrox in the summer, in a move that would surely close the gap between the Gers and their bitter rivals significantly.
