Rangers have had to endure a testing couple of weeks, with the trouble surrounding Joey Barton and a disappointing run of results.

Rangers currently sit fifth in the Scottish Championship table after a particularly difficult spell that has seen them win just one of their last four outings.

The off-field problems with Joey Barton have exacerbated the situation, and many Rangers fans are questioning whether the former Burnley man is worth all the trouble.

It has been glaringly obvious that Mark Warburton’s men are a long way off of challenging for the title this season, with Celtic looking far superior thus far.

Despite the transfer window being shut, it is still possible for clubs to bring in players on free transfers, and one free agent currently available could be the ideal addition to the Rangers squad.

Former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles has been without a club following his release from Fenerbahce this summer, and would improve Warburton’s options immeasurably.

He is cool and composed in possession of the football, and possesses impeccable technique.

He also offers a goal threat from midfield – something that Rangers severely lack at present.

The experience Meirelles would bring to the Gers squad could be invaluable, and it is unlikely he would be overawed by the pressure of playing for such a massive club, with his history of playing for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The 33-year-old former Portugal international has proven pedigree, and would be a fantastic replacement for Barton during his absence, and potentially for the long-term.

Whether or not the Glasgow giants could afford the high wages Meireles would undoubtedly demand is another matter, but if it is at all possible, they should make every attempt to bring the Portuguese star to Ibrox.
