The former England international would be a useful addition to the Glasgow Rangers squad this summer.

Pedro Caixinha has endured a harsh baptism at Rangers, with many fans and pundits already questioning his appointment as manager at Ibrox.

The Portuguese undoubtedly has to strengthen his squad, if he is to guide the Gers to a successful Scottish Premiership campaign, and the addition of an established striker will surely feature highly in his plans.

The problem for him, however is that funds are limited, so he will have to be smart in his player recruitment.

With this in mind, the 46-year-old should consider a move for former Southampton and Liverpool hitman Rickie Lambert, who is available on a free transfer following his release from Cardiff City this summer.

The 35-year-old striker is highly experienced in playing at the highest level, and would add a certain amount of know-how and potency to the Rangers front-line.

He has scored 218 goals in 607 career league appearances, during spells with nine different clubs, and despite his advancing years, he would surely still have a lot to offer in Scotland’s top tier.

Standing at 6ft 2in tall, and powerfully built, Lambert is ideally suited to the robust nature of the Scottish game, and would provide Rangers with a fantastic focal point to their attacking play.

The ageing striker would offer Caixinha’s men a far more potent aerial that, and would provide the Portuguese the option of playing with a more direct approach.

One potential stumbling block could be his wage demands, but if some kind of compromise could be reached, and Lambert does in fact end up moving to Ibrox, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for Rangers.
