Glasgow Rangers need one of their strikers to start scoring goals.
Rangers forward Eduardo Herrera got a rare chance to impress when he replaced Alfredo Morelos in Saturday’s clash against Dundee but, while the 29-year-old failed to make his mark, he should not be judged until he is given a prolonged run in the team.
While Morelos and Kenny Miller have started more often than not in recent weeks, Herrera has had to make do with a bit-part role and strikers need time to build up a head of steam.
While Morelos’s confidence looks shot and he has come in for plenty of criticism during his goal-drought, Miller deserves belters of his own and one wonders how Herrera would have fared if he had been given the veteran forward’s chances in the starting line-up.
He would not have done much worse and he may have done a darn sight better, but until Rangers get another permanent manager, under-performing players who should know better may continue to be picked week in, week out.
Herrera is experienced enough to know he should be making a difference off the bench, but he really deserves some of Miller’s starts and it will be interesting to see if he can turn things round in the second half of the campaign.
Next up for Rangers is a double-header against Aberdeen and how their campaign is destined to play out will look a whole lot clearer after that.
