Glasgow Rangers clearly need to strengthen their squad in order to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.
Mark Warburton’s men have endured a challenging return to the Scottish Premiership, after their four year sabbatical from the top flight.
And despite the fact that they are in second position in the table, the 19 point gap between them and fierce rivals Celtic is evidence of the gulf in quality between the two sides, and highlights how much ground they still have to make up.
They have already shipped 21 goals in the league this season, and the need for a top quality centre-back is quite clear for all to see.
Arsenal’s Rob Holding
And Warburton should consider using his club’s amicable relationship with Premier League side Arsenal by attempting to take Rob Holding on loan for the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old former Bolton Wanderers centre-back has found his playing time limited at the Emirates, and with Per Mertesacker’s imminent return from injury, he will likely fall further down the Gunners’ defensive pecking order.
When he has played for Arsenal, however, he has performed admirably, and showcased the qualities needed to make it at the highest level.
He is commanding in the air, quick along the ground, and plays with a certain level of maturity that defies his tender years.
Arsenal’s Rob Holding in action
And he would be a fantastic addition to the Rangers backline, by providing them with a energetic and mobile option.
On top of that, a loan move to Ibrox would benefit Holding as much as it would Rangers, and would surely help him develop the physical side of his game.
Whether Arsene Wenger would be willing to allow the youngster to leave for the rest of the season is debatable, but if the Frenchman does not see Holding as a key member of his squad this term, the decision should be an easy one to make.
