Islam Slimani’s inclusion on Newcastle United’s training trip to Spain has led to excitement that he could feature against Huddersfield Town, but Rafael Benitez must be cautious over his use of the January signing.

When Slimani was brought to Newcastle, the Leicester City loanee was expected to step straight into Benitez’s starting line-up.

However, injury has curtailed his progress, and there may be an argument to suggest he should be left on the substitutes’ bench, even if he is fit now.

Newcastle’s form over recent weeks has improved, particularly in attacking areas.

The Magpies have scored in five of their last six matches, with Dwight Gayle playing a starring role.

Gayle has claimed two assists and two goals in his last four Premier League starts, with the striker enjoying his best run of form for the entire season.

There may be doubts over Gayle’s quality to play at the top level, but taking him out of the team while he is on form would arguably send out the wrong message.
