Queens Park Rangers boss Ian Holloway once called Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack the best player in the Championship.
Before this season started Ian Holloway told Sky Sports that he felt Aston Villa were signing the best player in the Championship, when they brought in Ross McCormack.
Holloway, who was then working as a pundit, felt that McCormack had the ability to be Villa’s main goalscorer this season.
He said to Sky Sports: “I’ve seen they’re in for Ross McCormack, that could make the difference. He’s the best player outside the Premier League.”
However, things have not worked out as expected for the Scotland international at Villa Park this season.
McCormack struggled during his first few Villa appearances, and then a public fall out with Steve Bruce saw him shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in January.
Even a change of scenery does not seem to have coaxed McCormack’s best form out of him.
The 30-year-old already appears to have fallen out of favour at Forest, and he has been left on the bench recently.
It leaves McCormack’s career at a crossroads, as the summer transfer window edges closer.
McCormack will surely leave Villa in the near future – but there has to be a question of which Championship sides will be interested in him.
McCormack is reaching the twilight of his career now and is on big wages at Villa.
It leaves his options limited, but with Holloway a known admirer it may be that Queens Park Rangers could do a deal.
QPR have generally targeted younger players in recent times, as they look to change their transfer policy, but Holloway may find himself persuaded to make an exception if McCormack is available.
If Holloway truly believes McCormack is the best player in the Championship, then QPR may just be willing to take a gamble to see whether they can get the forward back to his best.
