Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly cooled their interest in Schalke star Max Meyer.

A report in the Daily Mirror has suggested that Tottenham’s interest in signing Schalke star Max Meyer has cooled recently, potentially leaving the path clear for Liverpool and Everton to swoop in this summer.

The Mirror reports that Mauricio Pochettino is less keen on bringing Meyer to Tottenham due to the fact that he would have to rival Dele Alli for a place in the team.

However, with the Mirror adding that Liverpool are optimistic that they could get a deal done for as little as £14 million with his contract set to expire next summer, it surely makes sense for Spurs to reconsider their stance on the forward despite his struggles in the Bundesliga this season.

Bild reported last summer that Tottenham were plotting a £38 million move for the 21-year-old, and while their interest may have diminished slightly since, the idea of being able to land him for £24 million less than they had previously hoped should surely appeal to Pochettino.

Meyer has only scored one goal in the top flight this term, and is yet to contribute an assist, but he has shown during his brief career that he has the potential to become a considerably better player than the one he has been this season.

And while Pochettino may have switched his attention to other targets – the Mirror suggests that Ross Barkley has become more of a priority than the Germany international – boosting the depth by adding a player of Meyer’s potential for around £14 million could be an excellent piece of business, especially with another Champions League campaign seemingly on the horizon.
