Manuel Pellegrini wanted Ross Barkley previously, and the new West Ham United boss should consider making another move this summer.
According to a report from The Sun, Ross Barkley is growing frustrated at Chelsea after a campaign that saw him make just two Premier League appearances following his £15 million switch in January. And that frustration should perhaps alert new West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini.
The Telegraph reported in 2014 that Pellegrini was keen to bring Barkley to Manchester City in a £30 million move after the club had previously been put off by his £50 million asking price. Of course, a deal would not take place on that occasion, but perhaps the Hammers should make a loan bid for the playmaker this summer.
The Sun’s report does not suggest whether Barkley’s frustrations will lead to anything like a move away from Stamford Bridge, but the Irons should certainly register an interest in the hope that the Blues feel that a year away will help the 24-year-old get his career back on track.
Barkley has become England’s forgotten man, but his emergence into the Everton side showed how much talent and quality he undoubtedly possesses. Perhaps becoming the focal point at the London Stadium may be exactly what he needs to rediscover that form once again.
If Pellegrini does pursue a deal for Barkley and manages to bring the best out of him, West Ham will be able to reflect on a stunning piece of business as he has the ability to ensure that the Hammers are nowhere near the battle to stay out of the bottom three next season.
Chelsea may have no desire to listen to any kind of offers for Barkley this summer, but after wanting him a few years back, Pellegrini should perhaps view reports on his frustrations as an opportunity to try his luck and make a fresh move. If Chelsea have any sense, letting him head to West Ham for a season could prove to be a masterstroke if his frustrations are unlikely to be alleviated anytime soon.
